Vitex Keniensis, commonly referred to as Meru Oak is a large tree that is mostly found in Kenya. The tree is characterized by its golden-green leaves and black seeds when mature. It is mostly planted for timber and for the production of seeds which can also be consumed as fruits.
The Meru Oak tree grows up to twenty meters high and mostly has a straight, wide bark. It is considered to be one of the largest tree indigenous to Kenya. Due to its popularity for making timber and wood fuel the tree has been greatly exploited by lumbers and is now considered very rare. Several plantations of the tree can be found in the Meru area inside the larger Mount Kenya Forest.
The Meru Oak tree does well in fertile well drained soils and in areas which receive mid to high levels of rainfall annually. It is mostly planted in the upper Eastern and central regions of Kenya including Meru, Embu, Laikipia and other neighboring counties.
